Define dating vs hanging out
When the dating reaches a particular point when both the people dating are sure that the person they were dating means more to them than just a date, when they realize that they do not want to see other people and just go out with one person, then the relationship is said to have reached a stage where two people are “going out” with each other.
It refers to a serious commitment where the two people involved are exclusive with each other and are no longer seeing other people.
They spend time in understanding the person and figuring out if there are feelings involved which might lead to a more serious kind of relationship where exclusivity is required.
to me it depends on what age difference we are talking about.

that person in no way will ever be ready for a lifetime commitment at such a young age..if we are talking 40 and 57 then yes I think it would work only assuming both are mature adults and have had much experience in past relationships.
